Skokie This Summer: What's Actually New on Oakton Street

Skokie This Summer: What's Actually New on Oakton Street

  • July 9, 2026

Two years ago, walking east on Oakton from the library to Floral Avenue meant passing three or four papered-over storefronts before you got to something open. This summer, the same walk introduces you to an açaí bar, a bonbon-and-gelato counter, a halal smash burger shop, and a vintage-poster dealer, all within a three-block window. The block hasn't been rezoned or rebuilt. It has just been slowly refilled.

That refilling is the story of Skokie summer 2026. The village's Downtown TIF district, which quietly moved money into rehab grants year after year, has produced a cluster of independent openings dense enough to change how the corridor actually reads on a Saturday afternoon. And it's happening in the same season the Skokie Farmers' Market marks its 51st year and Backlot Bash closes down Oakton for three days at the end of August. If you live here, this is the summer to walk the block.

The most concentrated turnover is happening between roughly Lincoln Avenue and the Highpoint building.
